Improve how you move

If you are here, then you probably already know that sometimes treating the site of your pain is not very effective.

In order to enjoy pain free movement once again, we must address the route cause of the pain, not just the pain itself.

What is biomechanics?

There are two types of biomechanics; extrinsic and intrisic. Extrinsic looks at your body from the outside and assesses whether it moves in an optimal mechanically efficient way . Intrisic, which is what I do, looks at what is happening inside the body to create that movement and in particular, whether the body is compensating for disfunction. If the body is compensating, then it may be placing abnormal loads on muscles or nerves and the more we repeat those movements with compensation, the more risk of injury increases.

Here’s an example; pelvic rotation can cause a leg length discrepancy and piriformis is just one of the muscles that may go into spasm to protect the hip if this happens. The sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle, therefore a spasm in this muscle could cause the sensation of tight hamstrings and possible injury.

The spine may then compensate for the leg length discrepancy by curving (scoliosis), which leads to abnormal loading of the spine and possible pain.

If the spine doesn’t compensate for the leg length discrepancy, the knee and foot may compensate instead, leading to pain in those joints.

This is just one way that pain could be manifesting in other areas beyond the original area of disfunction.

Here’s another; did you know that your Hamstrings (muscles at the back of the thigh) are actually biomechanically linked to your shoulders, via myofascial slings that link the body from one side to the other? So your shoulder pain could actually be stemming from a pelvic rotation.

My Biomechanics assessment uses a series of established tests to check for range and symmetry to identify any “problem” areas.

Once we have established how you are moving, we’ll follow an evidence based system, including muscle energy techniques, lumbar and thoracic spine mobilisations, and sciatic and median nerve mobilisations to bring your body back into balance.
